Local politicians blasted the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade Friday, a ruling that declared the constitutional right to an abortion—upheld by the Court for nearly 50 years—no longer exists.
Abortions had been legally protected under federal law since 1973 but will no longer be available in much of the country as a result of the ruling.
Nearly half the states in the U.S. are expected to end access to abortions or place severe legal restrictions on the medical procedure.
State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky (D-Parkland) said she “never thought we would be here again in my lifetime.”
“With today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision, which effectively overturns Row vs. Wade, the constitutional protections of a woman’s right to choose are gone,” Hunschofsky said. “In Florida, that means as of July 1, the law defaults to the 15-week abortion ban that does not allow exceptions for rape or incest. As a woman, I am appalled by the cCourt’sdecision that takes the rights of women back 50 years, and I remain committed to a woman’s right to privacy and a woman’s right to make personal health decisions.”
U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, who represents Coral Springs and Parkland, said, “the right to bodily autonomy is not just a constitutional right. It is a human right.”
“This much is clear,” said Deutch. “Even as the relentless attacks on Americans’ most personal, most basic rights continue, we will fight to protect women’s reproductive rights and safety. Now is not a time for panic, but a time for focused action in order to protect, uplift, and support one another. Our work continues, together.”
State Rep. Dan Daley (D-Coral Springs) called the Court’s ruling “an abomination that takes us back in time.”
“The right to choose is sacrosanct and should be protected at all costs,” said Daley. “We will continue this work. Despite today’s ruling, abortion is still legal in Florida.”
Daley said those in need of the medical procedure could find a verified abortion provider by visiting https://www.abortionfinder.org.
The Court’s 6-3 decision came in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. They overturned the Court’s 1973 ruling that found a constitutionally protected right to an abortion in Roe v. Wade.
In Friday’s ruling, the six justices in the majority were all appointed by Republican presidents, including three appointed by former President Donald Trump.
