Former Coral Springs High School star Lewis Brinson who officials believed was the subject to racial slurs Sunday afternoon during the Miami Marlins 13-8 loss to Colorado Rockies, said it was a misunderstanding.
In the ninth inning, with Brinson taking his fifth and final at-bat of the game, a microphone behind the plate could be heard hearing a fan yelling the n-word repeatedly at the hitter. Brinson ended up recording a walk.
After an investigation with the fan, his family, and season ticket holders, the Rockies say the fan was chanting “Dinger” which is the mascot of the team.

Roughly three hours after the game, the Rockies issued a statement.
“The Colorado Rockies are disgusted at the racist slur by a fan directed at the Marlins’ Lewis Brinson during the ninth inning of today’s game,” the team said in the hours after video clips from the Marlins’ Bally Sports broadcast circulated on social media. “Although the subject was not identified before the end of the game, the Rockies are still investigating the incident.
Brinson is in his fifth season in the MLB and graduated from Coral Springs High School in 2012. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers before being traded twice, then back home with the Marlins.
Despite a slow start to the season, Brinson has been red-hot of late. He has recorded ten hits in his last seven games, including a grand slam on August 2 against the New York Mets.
