On Monday, candidates running for judicial and school board seats had an opportunity to convince Coral Springs residents at Park Summit Senior Living Center why they should vote for them.
With the primaries in just two weeks, time is of the essence, especially because the judicial races will be decided on August 26. The School board race between Abby Freedman and Bob Mayersohn could be decided if one of them captures 50 percent plus one vote. If not, they’ll have a runoff in November.
“I believe every child should get the best education possible,” said Mayersohn who stated he has been endorsed by the Broward Teachers Union, the Broward Police Benevolent Association, Broward County Council of Professional Fire Fighters, the Metro-Broward Professional Fire Fighters Local 3080 and The Hispanic Vote.
“My passion has driven change throughout Broward County. I have to tell you, that is what keeps me going every day,” said Freedman who said that 55,000 people voted for her in 2012.
There are four candidates for Circuit Court Judge Group 16 and each one talked about some of their philosophies.
Dennis Bailey said his philosophy is to change his courtroom so it’s not about rich and poor and added that “Justice delayed is justice denied.”
Andrea Ruth Gundersen said she has been in practice for 22 years and believes that everyone in the court deserves respect. She said she has an open mind and the right demeanor to be a judge.
Rhoda Sokoloff believes one should always follow the law as it should be, and believes she has the right temperament for the job as a circuit court judge.
Russell Thompson said his philosophy is to treat all parties as equals and to listen to both sides. He believes people want a judge that they would feel comfortable about standing in front of.
In Group 27 for Circuit Court Judge, both John Contini and the incumbent, Judge Steven Feren spoke about their qualifications and what they believed was the most important court decision. Contini quoted the Miami Herald and said that Feren does the minimum needed to get through the day and afterward has nothing to do. Contini believed that the 1966 court case Miranda vs Arizona was the most important court decision. “Confessions have to be legitimate, and at least now we have safeguards in place.”
Feren spoke about his 34 years of experience as an attorney and how he has already presided over 15,000 cases in the past five years. He believed that Brown vs The Board of Education was the most important court decision. “It opened the door for a whole new era of non-discrimination of the African American community.”
Candidates for County Court were not covered by Coral Springs Talk due to time restraints. The Primary Election will be held on August 26, 2014.
