The city commission will discuss upgrading infrastructure at the Water Treatment Plant on Wednesday.

They will vote on awarding Eckler Engineering, Inc., a $1.2 million contract to upgrade its sodium hypochlorite system, which cleanses the city’s water supply.

The project, at 3800 NW 85th Ave., falls within the City of Coral Springs Water District and affects only residents there.

According to John Norris, director of public works, there is no tax or fee increase associated with the improvements, which are part of the city’s scheduled capital improvement plan.

City officials first entered into an agreement with Eckler in 2020, when they awarded the firm a contract for professional water, wastewater, and environmental engineering consulting services.

With the contract approval, Eckler has the ability to help in water and wastewater challenges, including updates needed for the treatment plant.

Parts of the plant’s sodium hypochlorite system have been in service for over ten years and have passed their life expectancy. The system is also deteriorating. It could fail and significantly affect the process of cleaning water for Coral Springs, according to city documents.

To address this, the city will take on a multi-faceted approach to upgrade the system.

Updates will include removing and replacing sodium hypochlorite storage tanks and piping systems, feed equipment and piping systems, and upgrading storage tank installation location.

It will also include upgrading storage tank locations, installing new chemical metering pumps, removing and relocating four distribution panels, and removing and replacing discharge piping, according to city documents.

Eckler Engineering estimates that the upgrades will be complete by January 2023.
