Coral Springs resident Nathalie Alfonso has been awarded the 2025 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art by the Orlando Museum of Art (OMA), receiving a $20,000 prize recognizing innovation and excellence in contemporary art across Florida.
Selected by juror Rod Bigelow, executive director of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Alfonso was chosen from a group of 10 featured artists in the annual exhibition presented by VyStar Credit Union and curated by OMA Chief Curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon.
Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Alfonso’s work explores themes of labor, movement, and embodiment. After immigrating to the U.S. at 18 and working as a house cleaner, she developed a deeply physical and repetitive drawing style, using motion as both method and message. Her site-specific piece for the exhibition, LineScape—Onset, spans an 87-by-17-foot wall and took three weeks to complete.
“It is a privilege to recognize Nathalie Alfonso,” said OMA CEO Cathryn Mattson. “Her work captivates the eye and challenges the mind, offering bold perspectives that invite deeper reflection.”
Alfonso holds an MFA from Southern Methodist University and a BFA from Florida International University. Her past exhibitions include The Frank Gallery and NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.
