A Coral Springs man was arrested after police said a struggle over a gun led to three shots being fired inside a home with children nearby.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Andrew Ajao, 33, was arrested November 1 on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, child neglect without great bodily harm, and shooting a deadly missile into a building.
According to police, officers responded to the home around 8:46 p.m. October 31 after a caller reported that a man was inside with a gun and shots were being fired.
The homeowner told investigators she had recently ended her relationship with Ajao, the father of her two youngest children. According to her statement, he left the home about a week earlier but still had access to its surveillance system.
Earlier that day, another former boyfriend had helped her shop for a car. She told police she believed Ajao saw them leaving through the surveillance cameras and became angry. That evening, she invited friends over to help change the locks and disable the cameras because she feared him, according to the report.
Records show a friend saw Ajao arrive and rushed to warn the woman, who was putting her newborn to sleep in the master bedroom. The friend helped her escape through a sliding door into the backyard.
A man who had been changing the front-door locks told investigators Ajao barged into the home, pulled a black handgun from his waistband, and headed toward the master bedroom while angrily searching for his former girlfriend.
The man said he repeatedly asked Ajao to put the gun away because women and children were inside, but Ajao ignored him, according to the report.
When the man’s wife stepped between Ajao and the master bedroom, her husband lunged toward Ajao to disarm him. The two fell to the floor and struggled over the weapon.
The man told police Ajao gripped the gun with both hands as he tried to pry it away. Three shots were fired during the struggle before he gained control of the weapon, according to his statement.
Investigators reported that the children were a short distance from the struggle and had a clear view of the confrontation.
Responding officers surrounded the home, called everyone outside, and searched for anyone who might have been injured. Inside, police found two handguns in the hallway, including a Glock with an apparent malfunction and a live round stuck in its ejection port.
The second handgun remained holstered. The man who disarmed Ajao told police it belonged to him and had fallen from his pocket during the struggle.
Officers also documented holes in a bedroom floorboard, a hole in the ceiling above a small child’s bed, and three shell casings, according to the report.
Ajao was arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail.
