The Jewish community came together to celebrate the start of Chanukah at the Sportsplex in Coral Springs on December 14.
Families enjoyed many fun activities, but the event was overshadowed by the terrorist attack that killed at least 16 Jewish people celebrating Chanukah on Bondi Beach in Australia.
Rabbi Yankie Denburg of the Chabad of Coral Springs insisted the celebration go on even after the tragedy. “This is amazing because we are producing light while they are producing darkness. Our light will shine,” he said.
Just before lighting the menorah, Mayor Scott Brook said he received a call about the situation in Australia and promised to arrange additional police protection for the event. He contacted the city manager, who arranged more law enforcement.
“I am a proud Jewish mayor of this beautiful city, and we must be the light,” said Brook.
U.S. Representative Jared Moskowitz came to the celebration directly from a flight from Washington and said there is strong bipartisan condemnation of the attacks.
Florida Representative Dan Daley participated in the menorah lighting and condemned the attacks.
The Chanukah celebration was a positive event, and families and friend groups enjoyed spending time together. Children participated in various games, inflatable slides, bumper cars, and other fun activities. Teens and adults shared meals and enjoyed socializing. The highlight was a performance by stunt bicycle riders. They performed various tricks, including a jump over Rabbi Denburg. The celebration concluded with a gelt drop.
