The American Humane Society has launched its 16th Annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards, a nationwide campaign honoring dogs that have demonstrated courage, loyalty and service in communities across the United States.
The awards program recognizes extraordinary dogs whose actions have made a significant impact on the lives of people and communities.
Past honorees have included military and working dogs, service animals, therapy dogs and family pets that have performed lifesaving acts or provided exceptional support to their human companions.
“For 16 years, the American Humane Hero Dog Awards have celebrated the extraordinary courage, loyalty and compassion of dogs whose stories inspire us all and reflect the very best of the human-animal bond,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of the American Humane Society.
“These remarkable dogs exemplify bravery, devotion and unwavering service, reminding us of the life-changing connection between people and animals. Their impact is powerful, their love is unconditional, and their stories embody the mission and heart of the American Humane Society every single day,” she said.
The organization is accepting nominations from the public through June 30 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Dog owners and supporters can nominate candidates online.
This year’s awards will recognize dogs in five categories:
- Law Enforcement and First Responder Dogs
- Service and Guide/Hearing Dogs
- Therapy Dogs
- Military Dogs
- Emerging Hero and Shelter Dogs
Military Dogs is sponsored by Nubz, while Emerging Hero and Shelter Dogs is sponsored by Trupanion.
Following the nomination period, the public will have an opportunity to vote for finalists. Winners will be recognized during a special awards celebration honoring their achievements and contributions.
The American Humane Society, the nation’s first national animal welfare organization, created the Hero Dog Awards program to highlight the important roles dogs play in protecting, assisting and enriching the lives of people.
