Eagle Ridge Elementary School’s Speech and Debate Club kicked off its third year with an impressive showing at its first competition of the school year.
The club, made up of fourth- and fifth-grade students, competed Oct. 15 at Sawgrass Springs Middle School, earning medals in several categories, including Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation and Original Oratory.
Led by fifth-grade teacher Jessica Schroeder, the club provides students with opportunities to develop public speaking skills, build confidence and strengthen their communication abilities through competitive speech and debate.
Schroeder said the students’ growth and confidence are just as important as their competitive achievements.
“The greatest victory, as their coach, isn’t always a trophy or a first-place finish; it’s watching a child who once doubted themselves stand tall, speak boldly, and realize that their voice matters.”
