A routine traffic stop in Coral Springs escalated into a physical altercation with a police officer, leading to the man’s arrest.
On July 31, an officer from the Coral Springs Police Department was on routine speed enforcement patrol near the intersection of North University Drive and Wiles Road when he observed a vehicle traveling south on North University Drive at an estimated speed of 50mph in a posted 35mph construction zone.
According to arrest records, the officer initiated a traffic stop as the vehicle passed, catching up to it at the red light of University Dr and Wiles Road.
After stopping the vehicle, the officer identified the driver as Hung Le, 34, of Coral Springs.
The situation escalated when Le became upset and demanded to see the officer’s radar reading. However, the officer explained that this was not standard procedure and advised that he could contest the citation in court.
CSPD records show Le continued to argue – even as he was instructed he was cleared to leave – leading the officer to place the citation on Le’s dashboard and return to his patrol car.
Records show Le exited his vehicle aggressively rather than leave, screaming and demanding to see the radar. Despite orders to return to his car and leave the scene, Le refused and continued to block the roadway.
The officer details in the report his repeated attempts to defuse the situation by getting into his patrol car to leave, but Le blocked the vehicle from moving. At one point, Le even ran to the car’s rear to stop the officer from backing out and driving away.
Records show the officer exited his car and told Le he was under arrest, but Le resisted, resulting in a physical struggle.
During the altercation, the officer’s body camera was dislodged and later found under Le’s vehicle. Additionally, the officer’s radio was knocked off, making him unable to call for backup.
The officer eventually managed to use his radio to call for backup, and additional officers arrived to assist. Le was subsequently handcuffed and taken into custody. He was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was later released after posting a $650 bond.
Le now faces charges of resisting arrest and disobeying a police officer.
