A man was arrested for exposing his genitals at a Coral Springs Starbucks last week, police said.
Tony Mitchell, 64, of Northwest 16th Street in Lauderhill, was reading a newspaper with a magnifying glass at the coffee shop at 2800 N. University Dr. on May 5 before he pulled out his penis and scrotum shortly before 8:30 p.m., according to an arrest affidavit filed by Coral Springs Police.
A woman who reported the crime was “visibly shaken and upset” by the incident and told police she wished to prosecute.
When officers caught up with Mitchell a short time later—spotting him on his bicycle as he committed a traffic violation—they ran a background check on the accused flasher, records show.
Police learned Mitchell was “on inmate release status for several violent sexual crimes,” including previous convictions for sexual battery with a weapon or by force, multiple counts of sexual battery coerced by threat, kidnapping, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to the affidavit.
Mitchell previously served multiple terms in prison, police said.
He admitted to being at Starbucks but denied exposing himself, records show.
Police said they could not obtain surveillance footage of the incident due to Starbucks’ “conflicting corporate policy,” the affidavit states.
No further details about that policy were included in the report.
Mitchell is charged with indecent exposure and driving with improper bicycle lights.
Records show he was released from the Broward Main Jail on May 9 on a $1,000 bond.
