A Boca Raton man faces robbery charges after allegedly posing as a state security officer and confronting a gas station employee in Coral Springs.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, the incident occurred on October 14 at the Rebel gas station, located at 4150 North State Road 7.
The victim told police he was performing his regular duties at the gas station, including cleaning trash receptacles near fuel pumps, when a man, later identified as Charles Guess, 73, approached him and asked what he was doing and whether he was authorized to work there.
The employee told Guess that he worked at the gas station and was legally authorized to do so because he was an American citizen. Guess allegedly demanded identification from the employee, who said his driver’s license was in his vehicle.
Investigators said Guess then produced a wallet, briefly displayed something inside, and asked the employee, “Do you know who I am?”
Guess allegedly claimed to be affiliated with “state security” or “state safety,” although police said he had no authority to act as a law enforcement officer.
According to the affidavit, Guess then ordered the employee to walk toward the gas station entrance and attempt to lock the door.
The employee complied, but as he approached the entrance, Guess allegedly shoved him with his right shoulder and yelled for him to sit down.
Police said the employee feared for his safety and went down onto his right knee.
While the employee knelt, Guess allegedly demanded he surrender his cellphone. The employee refused, prompting Guess to demand his keys, including those belonging to his residence, the gas station, and his personal vehicle.
Fearing further physical confrontation, the employee surrendered the keys, police said.
Officers responding to the robbery encountered Guess after another officer reported being waved down by someone matching the suspect’s description. The employee subsequently identified Guess during a police identification procedure as the man who confronted him, shoved him, and took his keys.
Investigators also reviewed surveillance footage provided by the gas station manager.
During the investigation, Coral Springs dispatchers also discovered that Guess had an active warrant issued by the Broward Sheriff’s Office for violating probation in a previous petit theft case
Guess was arrested on October 14 and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
