Alexis and Milo {Broward County Animal Care}
Two affectionate pets with special medical needs are searching for permanent homes through Broward County Animal Care.
Alexis, identification number A2476535, is a 7-year-old spayed female American Akita mix weighing 80 pounds.
She arrived at Animal Care as a stray from Davie in late May and was never reclaimed. Shelter staff describe Alexis as a playful, affectionate “big teddy bear.”
Alexis also participates in the Broward Buddies program, which allows community members to take shelter dogs on outings. Participants have described her as sweet, gentle when accepting treats and well-trained. She knows commands including sit, down and paw.
Alexis has completed treatment for heartworm and experiences chronic ear infections, but shelter officials said she continues to have an upbeat personality.
As a Pet Project-sponsored animal, Alexis will receive free food, vaccines and monthly preventive medication, along with reduced-cost veterinary care for the rest of her life after adoption.
Because of her size, Alexis would be best suited for a mature household with adults or older, larger children. Experience with Akitas or other working breeds would be helpful but is not required.
Milo, identification number A2479947, is a 3-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair weighing 10 pounds.
Described as exceptionally sweet and loving, Milo was surrendered to the shelter, adopted and then returned within one week because of a urinary condition.
Milo has been diagnosed with feline idiopathic cystitis, a painful condition in which the bladder becomes irritated, often because of stress. During flare-ups, affected cats may urinate small amounts frequently, strain, or have blood in their urine.
Shelter officials said Milo sometimes vocalizes frequently during flare-ups and produces only small amounts of urine at a time. He is currently eating, playing and using his litter box without problems.
The condition can often be managed by reducing stress, maintaining predictable routines, providing quiet spaces and enrichment, increasing hydration through wet food and multiple water bowls, and using a urinary-friendly diet. Although many cases resolve, male cats with the condition can develop a life-threatening urinary blockage.
Animal Care is seeking an adopter willing to manage Milo’s medical needs and give the young cat a second chance. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Adoption fees for Milo and Alexis have been waived. Adopters are responsible only for the $25 Broward County pet registration fee.
Both pets are available at Broward County Animal Care, 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. The facility is open daily for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
