Coral Springs Man Accused of Kidnapping Woman at Gunpoint After 911 Call From Moving Car

A Coral Springs man faces kidnapping and firearm charges after police say a woman called 911 from a moving car and fled into traffic to escape.

According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Jason Tran, 26, was arrested August 10 following a domestic incident that began near Wiles Road and later ended near Riverside Drive and Royal Palm Boulevard.

Police said officers were initially dispatched after the woman’s cellphone connected with 911 and remained on an open line. Dispatchers were able to track the vehicle by pinging the phone and could hear the incident unfolding inside the car, according to the affidavit.

At one point, dispatchers allegedly heard the woman tell Tran not to point a gun at her and to let her out. Police said she could be heard crying hysterically during the call.

Officers eventually located a gray four-door Kia near Riverside Drive and Royal Palm Boulevard. Police said the woman jumped from the vehicle and ran toward officers, while Tran was ordered out of the driver’s seat and taken into custody.

According to police, Tran later told officers that he and the woman had argued at Tire Kingdom, where he had gone to apply for a job.

The woman told investigators that she wanted to leave and have Tran drive her home to West Palm Beach. Police said that once they were in the vehicle, Tran allegedly yelled at her and told her to remain inside.

When she tried to open the door while the vehicle was moving, Tran allegedly pulled out a handgun, pointed it at her leg, and threatened to shoot her if she left the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Police said the woman was able to call 911 before Tran allegedly took her cellphone and placed it underneath his leg. She escaped when the vehicle stopped at a traffic light near Riverside Drive and Royal Palm Boulevard.

During a later interview with detectives, police said Tran admitted slapping the woman and pointing his firearm at her to prevent her from getting out of the vehicle. He also allegedly admitted taking her phone, telling investigators he believed she was making a fraudulent 911 call and did not want her using police resources.

Tran was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
