A Coral Springs man was arrested after police said he strangled a victim during an argument inside a vehicle, prompting her to escape and run toward a gas station screaming for help.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Angel Sabino Ajila Sanchez, 65, was arrested on November 1 on charges of domestic battery by strangulation and robbery by sudden snatching without a firearm or weapon.
According to records, officers responded around 6:12 a.m. after a caller reported seeing a woman jump from a moving vehicle and run toward him for help at the Mobil gas station at 10739 West Atlantic Boulevard.
The caller told dispatchers the vehicle sped north on Coral Springs Drive after the woman got out.
The woman told investigators that, during an argument in the car, Ajila Sanchez called her a “whore” and a “prostitute.” When she began recording the encounter, he allegedly snatched her white iPhone from her hand and began choking her.
The victim told officers she pushed him away, escaped the vehicle, and ran toward a bystander at the gas station for help.
Officers reported observing fresh marks on the front and side of her neck that were consistent with her account of being strangled.
Police began searching the area and located a white Kia Sportage in the Exxon parking lot at 2290 Coral Springs Drive. Officers found Ajila Sanchez there and took him into custody.
During an interview with a detective, Ajila Sanchez denied that a physical altercation occurred. He also denied taking the victim’s phone, which the report says was located in his vehicle.
Investigators noted fresh scratches on Ajila Sanchez that they described as consistent with someone defending themselves. The report states he changed his initial account when questioned about those marks but did not provide further details.
Police photographed the victim’s injuries and completed a domestic violence lethality assessment, which identified her situation as potentially lethal. According to the report, police forwarded the assessment to Women In Distress.
Police arrested Ajila Sanchez and transported him to the Broward County Main Jail.
