Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is undertaking a roughly $72.5 million project to widen the Sawgrass Expressway and improve its interchange at Atlantic Boulevard, with bridge replacements, reconstructed ramps and new bike lanes among the planned upgrades.
The project will expand the expressway, also known as State Road 869, from six to 10 lanes between north of Commercial Boulevard (Exit 5) and north of Atlantic Boulevard (Exit 8) in Broward County.
Crews will replace the Sawgrass Expressway bridges over Atlantic Boulevard to address flooding and reconstruct the interchange’s northbound and southbound entrance and exit ramps.
Atlantic Boulevard will also be widened in both directions. Eastbound lanes will increase from two to three, with a new bike lane extending from the Sawgrass Expressway to Northwest 121st Terrace. Westbound lanes will increase from two to three, with a new bike lane running from Lakeview Drive to the expressway.
Additional work includes stormwater management improvements at the pond west of the interchange, along with upgrades to signage, pavement markings, traffic signals, lighting and drainage.
Construction will occur during daytime and nighttime hours. Lane closures generally will take place during off-peak hours to minimize congestion and delays.
Nearby residents and businesses may experience periodic construction lighting, noise, vibration and dust throughout the project. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise said it will make efforts to limit traffic and noise disruptions.
The new expressway lanes will open once adjacent widening projects are complete.
Closures will be announced in advance through the South Florida and Treasure Coast Weekly Lane Closures and Work Zone Advisory.
