The high school swim teams from Coral Springs and Parkland met for a championship meet at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex on September 30.
The coaches of the participating teams were proud of their swimmers’ efforts this season and said they are looking forward to the upcoming county and district competitions. For the girls’ teams, Coral Springs Charter took first place, Marjory Stoneman Douglas was second, Coral Glades earned third, Taravella took fourth, and Coral Springs was fifth.
In the boys’ competition, MSD earned first place, Coral Glades took second, Coral Springs Charter came in third, and Taravella was fourth.
Charter’s Coach Sheri Wells-Smith was pleased with her team’s performances.
“Our swimmers are very dedicated, and many participate on club swim teams where they can train year-round. I tell the swimmers to continue practicing after the high school season,” said Wells-Smith.
Charter’s Elanie Guy earned first place in the 200-individual medley and second in 500-freestyle. Adelyn Gardiner earned first in the 500-freestyle and performed well in the 200-freestyle. They both participated in the 200-medley and 400-freestyle relay events. John Albornoz won the 200-IM and won the 100-breaststroke. Daniel Gil-Restrepo earned second place in the 500-freestyle while sixth grader Samantha Mock continued to shine in diving.
Taravella’s Assistant Coach Candy Allen said she was pleased with the teams’ performances. On the boys’ team, Joshua DeSouza performed well in the 50 and 100-freestyle. Nathan Thenor was strong in the butterfly and Silas Bricher was a leader in the backstroke. For the girls, Jaleah Knowles was strong in the butterfly and Dana DeSouza performed well in the breaststroke.
“We have a young team and we are improving,” said Allen.
Coral Glades coach Mark Van Voorhis is proud of the team’s efforts. Galen Tortorella is swimming well in the 100-breaststroke and 200-IM. Ben Denevi has been doing well in the 100-butterfly and 200-freestyle. Elizabeth Gonzalez and Haley Cohen have been swimming well for the Jaguars, according to Van Voorhis.
After the meet, the Coral Glades swim team celebrated senior night. The Jaguars have a large group of seniors and Van Voorhis brought each one in front of the team, complimented their efforts, and praised them for doing the work necessary to compete on a varsity team. “The kids are very dedicated and love being on this swim team. We work hard, and it is a positive experience,” he said.
The Jaguars swimmers cheered for each senior and then enjoyed pizza and cake.
The Coral Springs swim team has faced some challenges this year. Coach Renee Bond just began her position. She brought Kyra Agarwal who competed in the freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.
“I will work on building this team,” said Bond.
