Participants for the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life unite to celebrate those who have been touched by cancer or remember loved ones lost and take vow to take action for lifesaving change.
The world’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event, the The Relay For Life movement’s goal is to save lives from cancer. The event, held in conjunction with the City of Coral Springs, will be held Friday, April 13, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
According to organizers Rachel Frydman and Kendra Walsh last year’s event attracted 400-500 in attendance. This year, in solidarity with Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Parkland city officials, the event leadership team and student team captains, they have changed the theme to “Survivors Standing Strong” incorporating elements to honor MSD survivors, first responders, and those lost in the tragedy.
Walsh, a cancer survivor, said, “At Relay For Life of Parkland-Coral Springs, we want to show how the community can come together, celebrate survivorship, and have a fun and inspirational time.”

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the event lasts several hours and empowers communities to take a stand against cancer. Dollars raised by 2.7 million Relay participants across the country help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness.
The opening ceremony will include a special Survivors Lap. Survivors and their caregivers will also enjoy a complimentary dinner. After sunset, they will light Luminarias to remember those they have lost, to celebrate cancer survivors, and to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone.
