The carbon footprint of the Coral Springs Police Department is expected to get a little lighter — and just in time for Earth Day, says Sergeant Francis Capre.
Capre’s fleet learned they were acquiring hybrid SUVs for four of their patrol officers, with delivery in the next few weeks.
“As part of our vehicle replacement plan, we bought four 2021 model Ford Explorer utility vehicles. At a fleet meeting, we decided they were a better fit for officers who idle more during patrol,” said Sgt. Capre.
He added the officers who will be driving the hybrids are not yet determined, and Fleet Supervisor Steve Harbin will have more information when they’re issued.
The acquisition of the environmentally conscious SUVs was part of the city commission’s decision to approve a budget of $896,506 for vehicle replacement.
In March, the near million dollar allocation voted on was for various types of vehicles for official city use, including motorcycles and trucks for city parks and utility employees.
On March 15, City Manager Frank Babinec said the four vehicles for CSPD were $145,252.

The Ford Police Interceptor utility vehicles are the only ones worldwide, engineered to meet the 75-MPH rear-impact crash test, and are expected to save the city thousands of dollars in gas while in service.
