A touching display of kindness by a Coral Springs Police officer has captivated online audiences, with body camera video of the incident amassing thousands of likes and views on social media.
The footage documents an encounter between police officers and a down-on-his-luck driver on April 21 at the intersection of Royal Palm Boulevard and University Drive, where Officer Dominick Salvemini helped the man whose white SUV had run out of gas
Responding to a report of a disabled vehicle, Salvemini and another officer arrived to find the man waiting for a tow.
During their conversation, officers learned the man had been living out of his SUV for the past year and didn’t have enough money for gas.
Unwilling to leave him stranded, Salvemini took the initiative.
“I’m going to run over there, see if they can give me a red gas thing, and I’ll throw a little bit of gas in there for you,” Salvemini told the man.
The kind officer walked to a nearby Chevron station, filled up a gas can with fuel, and paid for it with his own money. Then, he walked back to the stranded SUV and filled the man’s tank.
“Let’s hope this is enough,” Salvemini said.
“Appreciate you,” the man said.
“Yeah man, of course. Hey, everyone needs help every now and then, right?” Salvemini told him.
“From here, things can only improve,” another officer said.
The heartfelt interaction has resonated with online viewers, who have left dozens of positive comments on social media commending the officers for their empathy.
“Such an amazing gift of kindness and compassion,” one resident commented on Facebook. “Thank you Officer Salvemini for being a leader and showing how it’s done.”
