Coral Springs High School Women's Basketball Coach Arrested in Alleged Scheme to Pocket Gym Rental Money

A pair of Broward County high school basketball coaches was arrested this week after investigators said they improperly rented school gyms for private tournaments and kept the proceeds for themselves.

According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Brenton Hankerson, 43, of North Lauderdale, and a security specialist and girls basketball coach at Coral Springs High School, and Henry McNabb, 42, of Deerfield Beach, and a security specialist and former boys basketball coach at Blanche Ely High School, are each charged with grand theft and organized scheme to defraud, according to arrest affidavits.

Authorities said McNabb and Hankerson used Broward County Public Schools facilities without authorization for personal financial gain. The investigation began in June after Broward Schools Police received a report of possible fraudulent gym rentals. 

According to affidavits, a person had booked Blanche Ely High School’s gym for a graduation ceremony scheduled for May 31. When the individual arrived to set up, he instead found a basketball tournament already underway.

Investigators determined that McNabb had rented out Blanche Ely’s gym multiple times for tournaments and had also arranged unauthorized rentals at Hollywood Hills High School. 

Hankerson was also found to have rented the gym at Coral Springs High School for several tournaments, authorities said.

 None of the events were approved through the school district’s official facility rental system, and no payments were made to the district. Instead, investigators said the coaches were paid directly by outside basketball associations, receiving thousands of dollars via Zelle.

According to the affidavits, Hankerson allegedly pocketed $5,950, while McNabb received $5,200. 

Both coaches were arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Broward County Public Schools officials said the arrests could lead to termination.

“Both employees in question were arrested by Broward Schools Police as part of an investigation into the improper use of district facilities for personal gain,” the district said in a statement. 

“The Superintendent maintains a zero-tolerance stance on public corruption, and both employees will be subject to termination.”
