Dr. Jennifer Liang, a longtime Coral Springs resident and pediatrician at Coral Square Pediatrics, died September 23 at 74.
For more than 30 years, Liang was part of the Coral Springs community, building lasting connections with patients, families and friends. Through her work at Coral Square Pediatrics and her life as a city resident, she became a familiar and caring presence to those who knew her.
Liang began practicing pediatrics in 1987 after completing an internship at Miami Children’s Hospital. She devoted her professional life to children’s health, bringing compassion, a sharp mind, and gentle warmth to the families in her care.
Born in Taiwan, Liang was the sixth of seven children, with five older sisters and a younger brother. Displacement, sacrifice, and determination to build a better future shaped her family’s story.
According to a family remembrance, her parents fled their ancestral home in Canton, now known as Guangzhou, for Taiwan amid the upheaval surrounding the Chinese civil war. Her paternal grandmother and other relatives sought refuge in Hong Kong. Reuniting in Taiwan exhausted the family’s resources, but being together again remained a profound blessing.
A maternal uncle who had lived in Washington, D.C., since 1945 later helped Liang’s mother immigrate to the United States, opening a path for the family to establish a new home.
Liang became a pharmacist before becoming a pediatrician. Her family remembers her accomplishments as a reflection of her hard work, perseverance, and desire to contribute to her community.
That commitment found a lasting home in Coral Springs, where her years in medicine became intertwined with the friendships and relationships she built as a neighbor and resident.
Shortly after retiring, Liang was diagnosed with mesothelioma. For approximately two and a half years, she underwent treatment while maintaining residences in Florida and Los Angeles, where she received care at UCLA.
Beyond her professional achievements, her loved ones remember her kindness, devotion to family, and the guidance she offered those closest to her. Her passing leaves a loss felt by relatives, friends, and the many patients she cared for throughout her years in Coral Springs.
Liang is survived by her husband, Dr. Philip Shen; her child, Kevin Shen; five siblings; and nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur H. Liang and Kwai-San Liang, and her sister, Victoria Papanos.
A service celebrating her life took place on October 17 at First Christian Church of Margate.
