A man already in custody on unrelated assault charges has been identified as the suspect responsible for vandalizing a church in Coral Springs.
On September 21, the Coral Springs Police were dispatched to the Living Word Christian Center at 3301 Riverside Drive in response to a delayed report of criminal mischief.
According to records, a pastor reported to CSPD that he had discovered that someone had removed letters from the church sign between Friday, September 20, and Saturday, September 22.
According to the pastor, the missing letters spelled “LIVING” and “CHRISTIA.” He told officers this was not the first vandalism incident but had never reported past instances.
During the investigation, officers contacted the Coral Springs Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center to review footage from cameras near the intersection. The report shows that RTCC confirmed they had footage of a male subject – later identified as Tevin Talbert, 30, of Lauderhill – near the church sign on September 20 at approximately 11:53 p.m. and again on September 21 at 12:02 a.m.
The arrest report indicates that footage showed Talbert jumping onto the wall where the church signs are mounted, smoking, and drinking from a can. He then kicked at the letters before removing them and discarding them in a grassy area near the wall.
CSPD records show officers searched the area and recovered some damaged letters, which were returned to the church.
Once the footage was shown to officers, multiple positively identified the man as Talbert based on previous arrests. Further investigation revealed that Talbert was not only currently on probation for an earlier Grand Theft Auto case but currently in custody at the Broward County Main Jail following an arrest in Margate on September 23 for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Following the investigation, CSPD filed multiple new charges against Talbert, who remains in custody.
