A basketball coach was arrested and charged with battery for attacking an opposing coach and player during a hoops tournament in Coral Springs, injuring both, court records show.
The coach, Peterlantz Dantes, 40, attacked the two victims after his team lost the Aug. 7 championship game of the Back to School Jamfest, held at Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Dr., according to an arrest affidavit.
In the first attack, Dantes of Pompano Beach ran toward the winning coach and threw a punch at him after the game, police said.
When the coach dodged his punch, Dantes pushed the man to the floor with both hands, causing him to tear his hamstring, according to the affidavit. Next, Dantes charged toward a player on the hurt coach’s team, tried to strike him multiple times, and missed, records show.
When the player fell to the floor, Dantes got on top of him and “began to press into his eyes with his fingers,” injuring the victim’s right eye, the affidavit states.
Neither victim was publicly identified by police. Records show that the basketball tournament was for youth and high school age players.
Coral Springs Police got a 911 call about the incident shortly after 5 p.m. and rushed to the gym. There, several people who attended the game pointed to a fleeing white Lexus with Dantes behind the wheel, records show.
Officers put out a be-on-the-lookout alert for the Lexus, which they pulled over a short time later in the 9600 block of Royal Palm Boulevard, police said.
One of the battery victims was brought to the scene of the traffic stop, where he identified Dantes as his attacker, records show.
Police also spoke with a female witness who captured the attack on her cell phone. Officers said her footage corroborated the victims’ accounts.
Dantes was read his rights, arrested, and invoked his right to an attorney, police said.
Records show he was booked into the Broward County Main Jail and released on a $3,500 bond.
