J.P. Taravella standout Camila Castillo raced to an individual title at the Northwest Area Cross Country Championships, while Coral Springs Charter captured the girls’ team championship.
A leading runner on the J.P. Taravella High School girls’ cross country team, Castillo said she believed in herself and felt good about her performance.
“My goal is to keep improving and run under 20 minutes over a 3.1-mile course.”
The Taravella girls’ team earned a second-place team score. Coach Dawn Spann said the team is doing well and improving.
“I believe we have a good team, and this past Saturday they competed at the Spanish River Cross County Invitational where they ran well. Camila has been working hard, and now she is coming into her own,” said Spann.
The Coral Springs Charter girls’ team earned first place, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas took third. Charter’s Lily Richardson earned second place; Charter’s Alyson Thomas took third, and Coral Springs High’s Olivia Higgins came in fourth.

“We ran well today, and we are improving. I am always glad when our team wins,” said Charter coach Brantley Barr.
MSD’s coach Michael Mauro said the team has been training hard and believes the runners can improve over the season.
A severe thunderstorm postponed the boys’ race. A middle school cross country race for boys and girls was also postponed.
