Residents craving Popeyes may no longer have to drive to Lauderhill or Pompano Beach.
The city commission approved a new Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to open in Cypress Run Marketplace, located at 10599-10667 Atlantic Boulevard, at their Wednesday meeting.
The restaurant will be located in an underused part of the parking lot in the southwest part of the plaza, but the restaurant will have new parking spaces on its property.
In order to receive approval, the city had to approve two items, conditional use for the drive-thru and a special exception to the escape.
Multiple residents raised concerns about the new Popeyes dealing with noise, late closing time, litter, and increased traffic.
Despite noise and traffic studies finding that the restaurant was within limits that the city allows, Commissioner Nancy Metayer spoke about traffic possibly leading to other issues. She raised the concerns considering that the new restaurant is located near Cypress Park and in an area where people frequently walk.
Neither Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons nor Commissioner Shawn Cerra expressed concern about traffic. Cerra, however, said that the location should consider security since it is near Taravella and could be more active during the afternoon hours.
For the special exception, Simmons moved to approve, while Commissioner Joy Carter seconded. The motion passed 4-1. Metayer opposed. Carter moved to approve the conditional use and Simmons seconded. It passed 4-1. Metayer opposed.
Resident Joe Morera, despite having concerns related to security and potential littering, expressed approval of the new Popeyes location, saying that he was happy about it.
“Welcome to Coral Springs, Popeyes,” he said. “I’m going to hate the pounds I’m going to gain because of you.”
