The Coral Glades High School Army JROTC program is moving up.
During a JROTC drill and color guard competition at Boyd Anderson on March 1, the Jaguars earned second place for mixed male color guard, second for female color guard, and third for new cadet squad.
For cadet commander Sergeant Major Emilie Guerra, who led the mixed male color guard, the second-place award represented a victory earned through hard work. The unit trains for two hours after school, Monday through Thursday.
“We were excited to win the award and have accomplished a lot,” said Guerra.
Leadership training is an important objective of JROTC, and Guerra said she learned how to run an organization. “I have control, but I must have empathy with the cadets to lead them to success,” she said.
According to cadet lieutenant colonel Tony Tran, the highest-ranking officer in the JROTC and a member of the mixed male color guard, accomplishments came from working together. “We worked together to learn the routines and performed better than in previous years,” he said.
Captain Yuriana Tejada, an operations officer and leader in the female color guard, was proud of the second-place trophy. She believes that teamwork is essential for success.
The trophies represent success for the program, according to Sergeant Major and Senior Instructor Diedre Nevels. “This program is improving, and it felt great to place high in the competition,” she said.
Next up: The cadets prepare for the state championship at George Jenkins Senior High School in Lakeland on April 12.
