Water is essential for life, and many people struggle to find clean drinking water.
Abril Rico, a Coral Glades High School senior, realized that many people don’t have access to clean drinking water. So, she created the Thirst Project Initiative, a subgroup of the school’s Key Club, of which she is secretary.
“Our project is getting students involved and raising awareness about the importance of clean water,” said Rico.
The project began in the spring of 2024 when the Key Club officers attended an education conference in Daytona Beach. Reina Wong, president, and Alicia Cornell, vice president of the Coral Glades Key Club, Abril Rico, and members organized a Halloween Party to raise money for the project. The officers and members also held fundraisers at area restaurants, and they have $646 for the Thirst Project.
They are applying for a $2,000 Key Club Grant and planning a fundraiser walk on the Coral Glades track at the end of March or in early April.
The Key Club Thirst Project aims to raise $12,000 over the next few years. The money will be sent to the International Thirst Project Initiative. According to Rico, it will be used to build a freshwater well for people in Eswatini, Africa.
