Coral Glades Marching Jaguars Leaders Aim for Another Winning Season

Jasmin Alarcon is hitting all the right notes at Coral Glades High School, balancing a demanding leadership role with standout academic achievement.

Alarcon, a senior, serves as drum major for the Coral Glades Marching Jaguars and plays alto saxophone. She has a 5.2 GPA and is ranked ninth in a senior class of more than 600 students.

“I believe it takes dedication and effort to be successful in band and music, and I work to instill that in the band members,” Alarcon said.

Her dedication has also paid off in competition. During the past year, Alarcon earned a superior rating in solo and ensemble competition and hopes to repeat that achievement this school year. She said she is looking forward to the Marching Jaguars’ upcoming performances and competitions.

Joining Alarcon in a leadership role is junior Jackson Bergeron, a trumpet player who serves as the band’s brass captain.

Bergeron has also earned superior ratings in solo and ensemble competition and hopes to continue developing his skills while helping his fellow musicians succeed.

“My goal is to improve as a trumpet player and help lead the band to more success,” Bergeron said.

Outside of music, Bergeron has a 4.2 GPA and a strong interest in history. He also enjoys playing pickleball and is a member of the Coral Glades golf team.

Coral Glades band director Alexander Sanchez said he is excited about what lies ahead for this year’s Marching Jaguars.

The band is scheduled to participate in the Falcon Sound Invitational at Flanagan High School on Oct. 3 before competing at the Florida Marching Band Championships on Nov. 14 at Pitbull Stadium at Florida International University.

The Jaguars will look to build on last year’s strong showing, when they placed fifth overall and earned first place in percussion in the Class 1A state competition.

“We have about 40 members, and they are all very excited about the upcoming performances and competitions,” Sanchez said.
