At the start of the cross-country run at Tradewinds Park, Coral Springs High School’s Marcus Gentilhomme said his shins hurt.
“My legs were sore, but I decided I would just go out and win the race, and I did. I felt good about winning the race, and I am looking forward to the upcoming district competition,” said Gentilhomme.
He won the Coral Springs area boys’ cross-country championship on October 13, after it was postponed because of severe weather.
Tyler Cline of Coral Glades High School placed second and was pleased with his performance. “I ran slower during the first two miles and ran a faster pace during the final mile. I felt good about my performance today, and I am working on improving,” he said.
Fabio Castillo, of Coral Glades, finished fourth and said he believes his team did well. “We are practicing hard every day,” he said. Castillo, a senior with a 5.08 grade point average, ranks 25th out of 627 in his class.
Coral Glades Coach Frankie Cunningham said he is proud of the team and said runners have been practicing hard to improve. “We have a tough district, and we have been working to get better. We are doing well because we show up and practice hard every day. I believe we will do well at the district meet,” he said.
Nick Rosenberg, captain of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) team, said the team is doing well and that he enjoys running. “We did well today, and we have been practicing hard this season.”
MSD Coach Mike Mauro was proud that his team earned first place at the meet and considered it preparation for the upcoming state qualifying meets. “We are doing well. This meet was a measuring stick to see where we are as a team. I believe we ran pretty well today,” he said.
The MSD team earned first place, Coral Glades took second place, Taravella came in third place, and Coral Springs Charter took fourth place. Coral Springs High School did not send a full team.
