A Coral Springs man faces insurance fraud charges after investigators uncovered false claims he and his wife made about damages allegedly caused by Hurricane Irma.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department report detailing the years-long investigation into the couple’s — identified as Alberto and Goldie Cuba — 2019 claim, investigators found that their claim of over $90,000 in purported damages to their home, including a screen enclosure they later admitted, did not exist.
Records show the investigation began when the Cuba’s filed their claim through Olympus Insurance on November 6, 2019. The claim alleged damage to their roof, skylight, ceilings, and a screen enclosure that reportedly covered their pool before the hurricane.
Inspection reports show that an initial inspection conducted in November 2019 found no evidence of a screen enclosure at their home near the 2500 block of Northwest 88th Terrace or any documentation proving it had been removed.
A subsequent inspection in February 2020 confirmed that aerial imagery dating back to 2005 showed the property had not had a pool enclosure for over a decade.
Also, in the report, investigators found no signs of wind damage to the roof or skylight.
Despite this evidence, interview records in the report show that the Cuba’s maintained in sworn statements during a July 2020 interview that Hurricane Irma had destroyed their pool enclosure, claiming unknown individuals removed the debris afterward.
Investigation reports show that during a follow-up interview in March 2024, the couple admitted they lied about the enclosure to increase their insurance payout. They also stated their public adjuster knew the enclosure had been removed in 2005 but encouraged them to include it in the claim.
On December 17, Alberto was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $10,00 bond.
