Police on Thursday arrested a Coral Springs man accused of stealing money from multiple non-profit organizations, including the Coral Springs Youth Soccer League and the Riverside Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization, authorities said.
Amed Avila, 42, of Northwest 126th Way, served as the volunteer treasurer on the boards of both organizations prior to a lengthy Coral Springs Police investigation into his alleged crimes, the department said in a post on its Facebook page Friday. The charges against Avila indicate he is accused of stealing over $100,000.
Avila is charged with multiple crimes, including first-degree grand theft, third-degree grand theft, organized fraud, and three counts of criminal use of personal identifying information, court records show.
Additional court information about Avila’s case was not immediately available, including attorney information.
An online biography for Avila identifies him as a managing director at Urban Philanthropies.
In an online article about Avila’s family in Spectator Magazine, Avila said he has also been a “Member of the Finance Oversight Committee for the City of Coral Springs, Member of the Coral Springs Police Community Ambassador,” as well as a “Board member of Broward Alliance for Neighborhood Development” and “Board member & treasurer for Sawgrass Nature Center.”
