A Coral Springs man was arrested for fleeing the scene of a fatal New Year’s Eve crash that killed a scooter operator, authorities said Thursday.
Jacques Malik Mayfield, 24, was driving a white Audi Q7 west near the 3000 block of West Copans Road in Pompano Beach when he struck Lokesley Myrthil, who was riding a Volpam electric scooter west on West Copans Road shortly before 10:30 p.m., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
According to BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives, the Audi entered the scooter’s path- just outside the bicycle lane – and caused the two vehicles to crash. Myrthil slammed into the windshield of the Audi and was thrown into the roadway, investigators said.
Myrthil was pronounced dead at the scene. Additional information about Myrthil, including their gender, was not made public by BSO.
Detectives said Mayfield kept driving after hitting Myrthil, continuing west until he reached the 3600 block of West Copans Road. He stopped there and, along with multiple passengers, took off on foot, according to BSO.
With the help of Coconut Creek Police officers, Mayfield and one of his passengers were spotted and detained while trying to get into an Uber vehicle, authorities said.
Mayfield was booked into the BSO Main Jail on charges that included failure to remain at an accident involving death, driving without a license causing death, and felony probation violation.
Jail records show that he was being held without bond Thursday.
It was not clear Thursday whether any of Mayfield’s passengers who fled the car with him would face criminal charges.
