A teenager has been charged as an adult in a fatal crash that killed a 22-year-old Coral Springs man in Boca Raton, authorities said.
Goose Benjamin, 22, died on impact during the June 29 single-vehicle wreck.
Benjamin was a passenger in a 2015 Mercedes-Benz when the car’s 16-year-old driver—whose name is being withheld by Coral Springs Talk because he is underage—allegedly tried to flee a traffic stop by Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies, court records show.
The driver, who had a learner’s permit and was driving illegally after 10 p.m., crashed into a tree on Palmetto Park Road, authorities said. He was charged this week with one count of vehicular homicide and one count of fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, records show.
The teen, now 17, is being prosecuted as an adult.
Bond information was not immediately for his case Wednesday.
According to a memorial tribute shown during Benjamin’s homegoing service, held at Grace Funeral Chapels in Lauderhill, he was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and moved to Florida in 1999.
Benjamin attended Crystal Lake Middle School in Pompano Beach and graduated from Deerfield Beach High School. He was enrolled at Florida Career College in Lauderdale Lakes, studying to become a medical technician, when he died.
He was father to a little girl, Queen Benjamin, and is also survived by his girlfriend, Stacey; his parents, Louisette Loulfalte and Gouze Benjamin; as well as a brother, aunts, uncles, and cousins
“Goose had so much goodness, so much capacity to bring goodness to others and such a bright future,” his family wrote in the tribute.
“He always seemed to look out for others and put others before himself.”
