At the September 23 meeting, City Manager Catherine Givens announced the city has been awarded two FEMA grants to support fire prevention, firefighter training, and emergency preparedness.
The first is a FEMA Fire Prevention and Safety grant, which provides $275,238.09 in federal funding, with a $13,761.91 city match, for a total project cost of $289,000.
This money will be used to purchase a Public Education Fire Safety and Emergency Training Trailer. The unit will provide the Fire Department with a mobile resource to deliver hands-on fire safety education and emergency preparedness training throughout the community, according to Sayona Khandwalla, spokesperson for Coral Springs.
The city was also awarded a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant totaling $90,909.09 in federal funding, with a $9,090.91 match, for a total project cost of $100,000.
This funding will support critical training and wellness initiatives for Coral Springs-Parkland firefighters. This includes $20,000 for overtime for personnel attending training, $15,000 for critical incident stress management, $9,000 for International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) peer support training, $11,000 for IAFF Resiliency in-person training, and $45,000 for IAFF fire ground survival and fire rescue training, according to Khandwalla.
“We are extremely grateful for this funding, which will help strengthen fire safety and emergency preparedness throughout Coral Springs,” said Khandwalla in a statement.
