A Coral Springs family is asking the community for help as beloved youth football coach Henry Smith fights for his life while awaiting a kidney transplant.
Smith, a husband and father of five, has battled kidney complications since 2022. Sadly, according to his wife, Dominique, his condition worsened dramatically last month.
“His health became critical on October 24 when he was placed on life support,” his wife, Dominique, said. “He is now off life support, but his kidneys are failing, and he urgently needs a transplant to prevent him from going back on life support again.”
Smith is officially on the kidney transplant list at Memorial Hospital in Miami, where his care team is working to find a match. According to Dominique, he can receive a kidney from donors with blood types B+, B-, O+, or O-.
Dominique tells Coral Springs Talk that Henry has been a mentor for young athletes in Broward County for years. He spent three years as Head Coach of the Coral Springs Chargers youth football program, where he built a reputation as a positive role model who pushed his players to work hard and believe in themselves.
Even after stepping down due to illness, he continued coaching as an assistant with the Pompano Eagles. The team went on to win a championship and compete nationally last year.
“Henry has always been a giver to his family, to his players, and to this community,” Dominique said. “He has encouraged discipline, hard work, and confidence in every athlete he works with.”
Now, she says, Henry needs the community he has poured into for so long to step up for him. The family has launched a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses, travel, and ongoing care during the wait for a lifesaving donor.
“We are praying for a miracle, and we are reaching out in hope that with the community’s support, we can bring that miracle closer,” Dominique said.
Anyone who believes they may be a compatible donor is encouraged to contact Memorial Hospital’s transplant team for guidance and screening.
The GoFundMe, titled “Father of Five Needs a Kidney Transplant,” can be found here.
