Caden Ankele, a team captain of the J.P. Taravella wrestling team, was excited to win his first district championship.
He achieved first place at the district tournament at Coral Springs High School on February 18. The Trojan team finished second, behind Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
“I put in a lot of time training to prepare for the wrestling season. I would run in the morning and afternoon and think about the opponents I would face,” said Ankele.
Ankele said he feels good about the victory and is now looking forward to the regional competition. “I feel all the hard work paid off,” he said.
Coach Michael Bazos was excited about earning second place.“We have all worked hard during the season to prepare for this meet, and we wrestled well,” said Bazos.
Amir Salmeem earned second place, and other Trojans qualified for the regional meet at South Dade Senior High School, according to Bazos.
The Coral Springs High School wrestling team finished in third place. Dylan McKeon won a district championship for the Colts. “It was an amazing feeling to win, and I am looking forward to the regional meet,” he said.
Tavish Perera of Coral Springs also earned first place. “It was a great feeling to win,” he said.
