Caden Ankele is a leading wrestler for J.P. Taravella High School.
A team captain, he wrestles at 150 pounds, has a 15-4 record, and was one of four seniors honored during senior night on January 22 during the team’s victory over Monarch and Stranahan.
Last year, Ankele qualified for the regional meet, and this year he wants to compete in the state championship meet. “It takes time, consistency, and discipline to do well in wrestling,” said Ankele.
He enjoys wrestling, but after high school, Ankele plans to attend the fire academy and pursue a career as a firefighter/EMT.
Anthony Walton, 165 pounds, was also honored as a senior. He plans to attend the University of Central Florida and pursue an engineering degree. Walton may join a college wrestling club. “It takes a lot of blood, sweat, and dedication to compete in wrestling, and you need start as early as possible,” he said.
Dennis Bautista, 144 pounds, was honored and is hoping to do well in upcoming tournaments. “It takes training and discipline to be a good wrestler,” he said. After high school, Bautista wants to become a police officer and join the National Guard.
Angel Santiago was also honored for his efforts on the Trojan team.
The Trojans have a 12-3 team record. The team is now preparing for tough late-season competition. On January 30-31, the Trojans will compete in a tournament at Olympic Heights, facing strong teams from Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties. They will face powerhouse programs including Cardinal Gibbons, South Dade, Columbus, and Park Vista.
