From Coral Springs to the national stage, Janee Gresham, the newly crowned Miss Florida Plus, is ready to dazzle in Houston.
The Miss Plus America pageants are open to all American women if they are at least a size 14. According to the organization’s website, the pageants began in 2002 with the following core belief: “We believe all women are beautiful, inside and out.”
Gresham, 26, is the owner and founder of Plastered Media, a graphic design company that she describes as a full-service creative agency dedicated to the creative success of women-powered brands.
Through her work, Gresham enjoys encouraging young women to gain confidence in themselves and learn how to relate to others professionally. She’s always noticed how many young people, especially women, lack self-confidence. Because she emphasized the importance of meeting people and speaking publicly, the Florida pageant represented a good opportunity to enhance her self-esteem and confidence as well.
“It was something I challenged myself to do,” she said. “That’s why I have such a passion for this.”
Gresham grew up in Fort Lauderdale but has called Coral Springs home for the past 11 years. A 2015 graduate of Boyd Anderson High School, she currently attends Broward College, where she majors in film and TV production.
Gresham said neither winning nor losing these competitions was paramount to her. “I think for me personally, I was more proud of the work I put into it,” she said. “I knew I had worked hard.”
She was well aware one of the criteria she would be judged upon would be her ability to articulate before a group of people. Community involvement was another criterion she knew would be important to the judges.
“They want to make sure you’re impacting your community,” she said. “You had to do your outreach. I was already doing that.”
The national event will be held from July 29 through Aug. 3 at Hilton Houston Post Oak, 2001 Post Oak Blvd. in Houston. This year’s pageant will not be televised.
