A Coral Springs man faces robbery and assault charges after making death threats toward Wawa employees who refused to sell him cigarettes for less than they cost.
On May 9, Coral Springs Police Department officers responded to a suspicious incident and potential robbery call at the Wawa convenience store on the 7400 block of West Sample Road.
According to arrest records, upon arrival at the store, officers made contact with the night shift supervisor, who detailed a confrontation involving a customer, later identified as Justin Ajayi, 30, who became irate while attempting to purchase cigarettes.
The Wawa supervisor explained to officers that Ajayi had approached her register to buy a pack of cigarettes, but upon counting his change, she informed him that he was short by about 20 cents.
CSPD reports show upon learning he didn’t have enough money to make the purchase, Ajayi began shouting explicit language at the employees and customers, insisting that they had seen him before and should allow him to complete the purchase despite being short the total amount.
Witnesses told officers the situation escalated when Ajayi moved behind the counter, an area restricted to Wawa employees, to which the supervisor recounted saying to him, “You can’t be behind here.”
The supervisor told CSPD she intervened, standing before Ajayi and insisting he could not be there. Ajayi responded by saying to her, “Don’t you ever put your hands on me. You don’t know who I am. You should fear for your life; you are so damn little.”
As the supervisor escorted Ajayi out of the store, he allegedly threatened her further, saying, “I will come kill you,” while reaching into his bag.
Officers apprehended Ajayi shortly after he fled the scene near the store on West Sample Road. Both Wawa clerks positively identified him in a show-up conducted by the CSPD.
Ajayi was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail where he was released on a $6,000 bond.
