A man was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter following the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s DUI investigation into a deadly traffic accident that unfolded on June 2, 2021.
Following the completion of the investigation and a warrant issued for his arrest, on December 23, the Coral Springs Police took the man, identified as Micah Aaron Pena, 25, of Coral Springs, into custody.
The traffic incident unfolded on the night of June 2, 2021, near an intersection between West Broward Boulevard and Northwest 15th Avenue, where Pena and the victim’s vehicle collided in a horrific car crash that left one man dead and multiple passengers injured.
According to the accident report, the crash happened just after 3:45 a.m., after two vehicles collided at a high speed. Tragically, one of the victims, a male, succumbed to his injuries, elevating the investigation to the jurisdiction of the homicide unit.
The accident report claims that Pena was behind the wheel of a 2013 Honda, racing down West Broward Boulevard at an alarming speed of approximately 99 mph in a 35 mph zone, striking the victim’s vehicle, a 2001 Honda CRV, as it was making a left turn to travel northbound on Northwest 15th Avenue.
As the two vehicles collided, the front of Pena’s speeding vehicle slammed into the side of the victim’s car. The impact was so severe that both vehicles careened out of control, with Pena’s car ultimately colliding with a DOT pole and the victim’s car coming to rest facing an easterly direction.
Pena was ultimately deemed to be not only driving recklessly but was also impaired. A subsequent blood test, facilitated by a search warrant obtained at the scene, confirmed the presence of Delta-9 THC, a component of marijuana, in Pena’s system.
Charges against Pena were officially filed on December 19, 2023, and on December 23, he was taken into custody near the 11500 block of 41st Street.
Pena was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and released after posting a $30,000 bond.
