The Florida Atlantic University Owl’s basketball team made the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Regional March Madness tournament for the first time in school history, and the school’s alumni association is getting ready to celebrate.
The FAU Alumni Association is hosting a watch party at Bru’s Room, located at 1000 N. University Drive, on Thursday, March 23, beginning at 8:30 p.m., as the No.9 Florida Atlantic Owls face off against the No. 4 Tennessee Volunteers at 9:00 p.m.
FAU beat the Memphis Tigers on Friday by one point, 66-65. On Sunday, they won the Farleigh Dickinson Knights 78-70.
The alumni association hosted watch parties for both of those March Madness games. But, according to Justine Avila, community engagement liaison and Coral Springs resident, Thursday’s watch party will be an excellent opportunity for community members to come together and watch a piece of FAU history.
Avila said even though the city has 6,628 FAU alumni; she hopes everybody who comes has a good time.
“It’s really about getting the Coral Springs community involved,” she said. “We want to make it a nice experience for everyone, even if you just love basketball. Come out and celebrate with us.”
The organization is still finalizing details on the watch party’s potential giveaways and other perks.
But for Avila, watching her alma mater make national headlines is impressive. When she was a student, FAU’s football team just came into existence. Since then, she has witnessed both the school and its athletic department grow and improve year after year.
“[March Madness] is putting FAU on a bigger map, a national map,” she said.
