The Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department demonstrated a new firefighting system on Oct. 9 designed to help crews reach fires inside electric vehicle battery packs and other difficult-to-access areas.
The Cold Cut Cobra System, acquired through Urban Area Security Initiative grant funding, uses high-pressure water and an abrasive material to cut through surfaces and to deliver water closer to the source of a fire.
The demonstration took place at the Coral Springs Regional Institute of Public Safety, 4150 NW 120th Ave.
Division Chief Chris Bator said the equipment has applications beyond electric vehicles, including attic fires and fires involving electric scooters and e-bikes.
“Today’s demonstration is really to show the capabilities of that tool,” Bator said.
Bator compared the system to a pressure washer, saying it operates at approximately 4,500 to 4,600 pounds per square inch. An abrasive material injected into the water allows it to cut through materials such as metal and concrete.
For firefighters responding to electric vehicle fires, reaching inside a battery pack can help address one of the biggest challenges: getting water to the cells fueling the fire.
“EV fires are very difficult to put out,” Bator said. “Sometimes they tend to reignite even after 24 hours.”
The system gives crews another way to target those fires directly.
“This tool allows us to penetrate the battery pack and put the water where it needs to go,” he said.
The Swedish-made equipment is currently mounted on one department vehicle, but Bator hopes to expand its availability to more trucks.
“We were able to get this one through a grant at no cost to the City of Coral Springs,” he said. “Our goal is to get these on more and more vehicles.”
