June is here, and now is the time to prepare for hurricane season. Last year Broward County dodged any major hurricanes, but it was not far away, with major impacts felt in Southwest Florida.
Check your hurricane plan now, or make one if you do not have one. Be sure you and your family (including pets) have all necessary supplies, including non-perishable foods, water, medications, batteries, flashlights, and other hurricane essentials. If you have a special need or would need access to a shelter, please visit Broward.org to register in advance so that in case of an emergency Broward County can help. If you have questions, please reach out and stay informed.
Schools out for summer, and graduations are in progress. I would like to congratulate all District 3 students on a successful school year, and I hope you have a restful summer!
If you are a new graduate going to college this fall, joining the armed forces, or entering the workforce Broward has many resources to offer. Broward County Libraries have many resources to research your next steps and offer informative sessions with everyone from job recruiters to continuing education. Additionally, Broward County has diverse job opportunities for all levels. I encourage you to apply because your future is bright right here in Broward!
In May, I recognized Miss Broward County Alana Scheuerer, who is from Coral Springs in District 3, with a proclamation. She was selected as Miss Broward County and will represent us in the Miss Florida program. It was an honor to recognize someone who has participated in many philanthropic efforts in our community. Good luck Alana; we are all rooting for you!
Every year, I am proud to support Mothers Against Drunk Driving at their Annual Walk Like MADD 5k Walk/Run in May. Participating in this event helps raise awareness for this important issue. Thank you to MADD, the volunteers, and the participants for advocating for safer communities and working to prevent future tragedies.
Broward County will observe Juneteenth on Monday, June 19 this year. All Broward County offices will be closed as we honor this holiday. This holiday is an opportunity to celebrate freedom for all and gives residents the chance to learn about the vital history of our nation. Finally, I would like to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! Being a father is one of the biggest responsibilities one can have and is one of the greatest joys in life. I hope all the dads have a relaxing Father’s Day and enjoy.
