This summer, the Coral Springs Museum of Art will host a poignant solo exhibition, “Before I Forget,” by South Florida fiber artist and curator Kristin M. Beck.
Running from August 1 to October 5, 2024, the exhibition aims to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia, inspired by Beck’s personal experience caring for her father, one of 55 million people globally living with dementia, according to the World Health Organization.
Beck’s commitment to raising awareness extends beyond the exhibition. The community is invited to participate in a Memory Quilt project, contributing fabric pieces with personal memories. The project coincides with the Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day and will be showcased on June 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the museum.
“Before I Forget” explores themes of memory and identity through various mediums, including textiles, fiber, video, paper, ink, and paint. Visitors will encounter interactive installations, such as a Memory Station and a bus stop replica symbolizing the concept of home—a resonant theme for those with advanced stages of dementia.
The opening reception will be held on August 1 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and admission is free.
In addition to the main exhibition, two condensed versions will be displayed at Broward County libraries. The Northwest Regional Library will host an abridged version from June 3-29, 2024, featuring an Alzheimer’s Community Symposium on June 28 at 2 p.m.
The North Regional/Broward College Library will showcase the exhibition in October, including a “memory cafe” for people with dementia and their caregivers.
