On March 7, fans of the pop group Fifth Harmony visited Coral Square Mall from all over South Florida to get their autographs, even securing access the month before when they purchased their debut album at a nearby store.
Who is Fifth Harmony?
I wasn’t sure really how popular they were on the “teen radar” so I asked my very own pre-teen daughter.
“Ever hear of Fifth Harmony?” I asked her.
Barely looking up from her homework, she gave me the “Are you serious?” look.
Accepting that as an acknowledgement that Fifth Harmony is known by an audience several decades younger than myself, I decided to read more about them as well as watch their videos.
Fifth Harmony is one of those female groups that weren’t formed as childhood friends growing up with a love for singing, but more like friends meet one another on a talent competition on TV. That show was called the X Factor.
Simon Cowell, one of the shows judges believed the girls were too special to let go, so at the end of the show’s Boot Camp week, the five young women became Fifth Harmony. The girls are all under the age of 21, and consist of members: Ally Brooke Hernandez, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane Hansen, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jauregui. They signed a joint deal with Syco Music, which is also owned by Simon Cowell.
“I knew from the girls’ first performance at judges’ homes in Miami that we’d done the right thing,” Cowell says. “The chemistry between the Fifth Harmony girls both on and off stage is fantastic. They are really great girls who have become best friends. They’re fun to be around and most importantly, they are all incredibly talented.”
According to their bio, their debut EP Better Together, which was released October 22, 2013, skyrocketed to #2 on iTunes and now officially lands the group their first TOP TEN album, which debuted at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. Featuring five brand new songs and their smash hit “Miss Movin’ On”; it’s a diverse, dynamic, and delightful introduction to America’s only teen pop female vocal group. The girls just announced that their first single off their EP is “Don’t Want To Dance Alone”, an upbeat, party tune that will make everyone want to get onto the dance floor and their song “Bo$$ has over 47 million views on You Tube.
I can see why teens love their music: it’s catchy, extremely over-produced and the girls are pretty. You don’t think Simon Cowell would have chosen an unattractive, or even an overweight girl to be in Fifth Harmony did you?
After their special signing at Coral Square Mall, where the instructions to the fans said “No posed photos with the band” the women went on to perform at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale that evening.
