The Coral Springs Public Art Committee (PAC) has voted to recommend approval for a new mural in the city’s downtown district, marking another step in the city’s ongoing effort to enhance its cultural and visual landscape.
During its September 17 meeting, the PAC endorsed a proposed design by nationally recognized artist CJ Hungerman for installation on the north building of the Cornerstone development, located near the intersection of Sample Road and University Drive.
According to the city, the mural will be presented to the City Commission for final review at the regular commission meeting on Wednesday, November 5. If approved, city staff will work with Hungerman to finalize the design and project timeline.
“Public art has the power to breathe life into a downtown while creating a greater sense of community pride,” said City Commissioner and PAC liaison Joe McHugh. “Our city’s mural projects are a meaningful investment in our overall cultural scene, and I look forward to seeing this artist’s vision come to life.”
Hungerman’s design, which features abstracted flowers accented by a bold black-and-white pattern, received praise from both the Public Art Committee and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. The proposal also came in under budget at $38,000, well below the $75,000 allocated for the project, according to the city.
Funding for the mural will come from the city’s Public Art Fund, supported by fees collected during the permitting process for new construction and renovations. The program is entirely self-funded and does not draw from the city’s General Fund.
A Geneva, Illinois–based painter and sculptor, Hungerman is known for his vivid use of color and geometric compositions that create a sense of surreal dimensionality. His work has been exhibited nationally and featured in multiple public art installations across the country.
If approved, the mural will become one of the most prominent public art pieces in Downtown Coral Springs.
