Tamarac’s Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek Hosts Annual Mitzvah Day and Open House Aug. 17.
Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek (TBTST) will hold its annual Mitzvah Day and Open House on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, welcoming the wider community to join in a morning of charitable acts and connection.
Rooted in the Jewish value of “mitzvah,” meaning both commandment and good deed, the event encourages participation in social action projects that reflect the synagogue’s dedication to tzedakah (charity) and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). Clergy, educators, and synagogue leaders will be on-site to guide attendees through volunteer activities and offer tours and registration for the synagogue’s Early Childhood Center and Religious School.
“This is a day to engage the community, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, in justice through action,” said Rabbis Rami Pavolotzky and Daniela Szuster, who emphasized that tzedakah includes not just donations but also time, effort, and awareness.
Attendees of all ages are welcome to take part in a range of volunteer projects, including:
- Creating greeting cards for the Daniel Cantor Senior Center
- Assembling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Craig’s Pantry in Plantation
- Donating new children’s clothing for JAFCO
- Baking and packaging cookies for Tamarac first responders
- Collecting clothing for veterans and Women in Distress of Broward County
- Donating shoes for children and teens through In Jacob’s Shoes
- Making fleece blankets for animals at the Humane Society
- Packing supplies for U.S. troops through Operation Shoebox
- Donating blood at the Big Red Bus, located in the synagogue parking lot, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This year’s event will also include a new initiative to support citizens in Israel. Through a partnership with Israel’s Masorti-Conservative movement, TBTST will launch a Pen-Pal program connecting local participants with Israeli adults and children. Students from the synagogue’s schools will make friendship bracelets to send abroad.
“No matter your background, everyone is invited to be part of these acts of kindness,” organizers said.
