TICKET ALERT: Marjory Stoneman Douglas Drama Students Take Flight in New Production

For those wondering how Peter Pan got his name, the history of the island of the lost boys, and the real story before he became the famous boy who never grew up, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Drama Department presents “Peter and the Starcatcher.”

This prequel to the story of Peter Pan is a devised theater piece, where the actors are storytelling what’s happening, and acting out certain narratives through physical illustration.

Something between a musical and a play, the music for Peter and the Starcatcher, was directed by senior Andrea Pena, who arranged the songs and taught the students the harmonies.

After auditioning in August, students began rehearsals following Labor Day weekend. Typically, the play calls for 12 to 16 people, but Drama Director Melody Herzfeld expanded it to 22, with several playing multiple roles.

Senior Logan Weber portrays “the boy” who eventually becomes Peter Pan. Last year, Weber earned a Cappie Award for his role in the Parkland school’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

Also featured is senior, Heather Hart, who plays Wendy’s mother, who shows Peter how to be strong and live his life.

As far as who should attend the performances, Herzfeld said, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders who know the story of Peter Pan would be able to follow along with it, and will definitely relate.

“It’s such a special show, with great themes, about family, support, and watching each other take flight,” she said.

In this production, there are more than just actors to watch for; lighting designer and junior, Ally Reichard, is using their new digital system, which has been a real passion for her.

“Watching her work has been amazing and seeing her making it come to life,” said Herzfeld.

Showtimes for Peter and the Starcatcher are November 7, 8, and 9, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets, can be purchased in advance at douglashigh.seatyourself.biz or at the door on the night of the show. Prices are $13 for adults and $8 for students.
