Arheanna Bryan, a J.P. Taravella High School female wrestler, won a regional championship (190 pounds) at South Dade Senior High School on Saturday.
She now has a 27-0 record and is preparing for the state championship on March 5-7 at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.
Bryan is ranked second in the state in the 190-pound weight class behind Paisley Murphy from Sunlake High School in central Florida, according to coach Michael Bazos.
Bryan defeated Makayla Ocean, a strong opponent ranked fourth in the state from Archbishop McCarthy High School, in the championship, according to Bazos.
“There was a lot of tough competition, and Arheanna competed like a warrior. We are looking for a great finish. She will be one of the top 16 wrestlers in her weight class in the state,” said Bazos.
Ten boys on the Taravella wrestling team qualified for the regional tournament, to be held on February 27-28 at South Dade High School.
“We are hoping to get a couple of our wrestlers to the state championship,” said Bazos. “We have done a great job this year, and we are excited about our future.”
The ten include Caden Ankele, Denis Bautista, Jelani Cuickshank, Johah Dixon, Andreas Geffrard, Louis Hernandez, Jadason Jimenez, Xavier Mangal, Moises Prieto, and Amir Sameem.
